I’ve used Dan’s expertise on numerous occasions over the past 3 years. Training is obviously of an extremely high standard during the season, but as soon as the season is finished and I fly back to London I make sure I train with Dan a minimum of 3 x a week to maintain my fitness levels, improve core strength and increase overall strength and power to make sure I’m in top condition for the new season. In January of 2013 after having a great run of games for HSV in the Bundesliga and building on the foundations myself and Dan had made in the close season, I was devastated to find out I had torn my medial and lateral ankle ligaments in a game against FC Nuremberg. This news was a hammer blow for me as I was playing very well at the time. I needed to get my focus right, so after the initial swelling had gone down I flew Dan out to Hamburg to help with the rehabilitation of my injury. Dan not only increased the stability around my ankle and got me playing again within 8 week’s, but his positive demeanor really helped my focus. My girlfriend now trains with Dan 4 x a week and she is equally as happy with the progress she is making. Dan has trained me in Barcelona, Hamburg and London and I would highly recommend his services to anyone who is looking for real positive change.

Before November 2013, I was a casual gym goer, did not have a good diet, and my weight had gradually increased through my thirties due to this relatively sedentary lifestyle. I had a goal to get into shape, however I was not realizing that goal, and in fact I had found myself going the opposite way, not liking the way I looked, and putting myself at risk of a number of health conditions. At the end of October 2013, I was leaving one job, and would be starting another job in December. I decided I wanted to use that month in between to kick start my health regime, and after much research and consideration, decided to do a one month bootcamp with Dan Lawrence, which involved 4 sessions a week for 4 weeks. Dan worked out a meticulous plan, designed personally for me so that I could achieve my goals for the four weeks. I am not going to lie, the training was hard and I was taken out of my comfort zone by Dan. But with each exercise, Dan explained the reason why we were doing the exercise, and I feel his expert knowledge really got me to understand how the exercises were going to help me and this also really motivated me to carry on when I probably would have taken it easy before. Dan also has great knowledge on the nutritional front, and put me on the alkaline food plan, which not only helps you lose weight, but also leads to both short and long term health benefits. Dan also introduced the food diary concept to me, which I sent to Dan every night detailing what had gone into my body that day, which really helped me in maintaining a healthy eating plan. After week one of the boot camp, I could already notice changes. My recovery time in between exercises had been dramatically cut, and I felt generally healthier. After the second week, friends and family noticed that my clothes looked looser on me, and this carried on through the four weeks. At the end of the four weeks, clothes that I previously could not fit into were fitting comfortably. Statistics never lie – total reduction of fat from the pectoral and abdominal region was 10.2cm – an amazing amount in just 4 weeks. Total weight reduction was 4.8kg. I was delighted with the results I have achieved in the PT camp with Dan. There is no easy solution, you personally have to put in the hard work to get results, but training with Dan made these results obtainable. Dan puts a lot of time and effort into each one of our sessions, and was available to contact if I had questions outside our training sessions. He has vast experience and knowledge in this area, and that shone through in the camp. I would highly recommend Dan Lawrence if you want to achieve your goals.

Dan’s approach was to essentially deconstruct my existing training methods and focus on facets of my fitness which would form the foundation for further strength improvement. For example, we worked on increasing the flexibility and mobility of my thoracic spine which ultimately, paved the way for me to perform compound movements such as deadlifts and squats more effectively, safely and of course with heavier weight than what I had previously been accustomed to.  He also analysed what I was doing outside of the gym and advised on how these could be changed to benefit my training. For example, he advised on the foods I should (and should not) be eating and rest I should be taking. His advice was at all times practical and sensible in that he understood that I have a busy career and am not a professional sportsperson who can spend hours every day in the gym and follow an extraordinarily complex nutritional plan. All in all, Dan’s an extremely dedicated trainer, a good lad and in my opinion, though he is destined for big things in the future he will I am sure remain his humble self. It was hardly surprising that results materialised. In just over a year, I managed to gain just under 5kg of muscle which was great when one considers that despite regular training previously, my weight had remained constant for approximately a decade. We have set ourselves goals  for the coming year and are confident we will achieve these.

I started playing tennis, after a gap of more than 20 years, during October 2012. I quickly realised that my ability to play the game was compromised due, in part, to a lack of strength and agility. I decided that the quickest way to improve matters was engage a personal trainer to help me target and improve the areas that would allow me to enjoy playing the game more My first session with Matt was in January 2012. I was really pleased that after just three to four weeks (seven sessions) I really noticed marked changes in my fitness and stamina. While the focus was on exercise that would help with playing tennis I also a lost a considerable amount of weight during these sessions. Around the end of March 2012 I decided that I would move the focus to weight loss. This entailed a critical appraisal of my diet. After keeping a food diary for just over one week Matt went through it pointing out the few good points and my failings, which were many. But some sound and simple advice put me a path that would lead me to overhaul my eating habits. As an experience PT has made a huge impact on me both physically and mentally. My favourite sessions are the ones I undertake at 6:30am. It’s a great way to start the day. I am also amazed at how quickly one is able to build strength. I never imagined that I would lift 16kg, even when I started training. Personal training has worked for me mainly because I have seen changes quickly and importantly there is someone to push and motivate me. I have been particularly impressed with Matt’s ability to get the best out of me. On more than one occasion I have reached the end of a session and found myself utterly surprised at what I had achieved! He is also very focused on the use of correct technique in all aspects of my training so as to get the best out of each exercise and importantly minimise the chance of injury. Matt has also picked up on areas of weakness and recommended exercises to do at home which should help remedy problems. Changing the sessions and bringing in new equipment means that I have had no time to get bored. Having not done any serious exercise for several years before starting the personal training Matt made me feel at ease, and still does, so that I could concentrate on my goals and get the best out of every session. I have trained with Matt for almost one year and have thoroughly enjoyed my sessions. (My son, who is a keen tennis player, has also had a session with Matt which he thoroughly enjoyed). In the coming months I will be working on building/improving muscle tone and strength along with further improvement in my diet and nutrition. I am also including classes on my fitness regime which I hope will build on and maintain the progress I have made during the year.
